If you are having a general anaesthetic for your surgery, it is essential that you follow the fasting instructions detailed below. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of your surgery.
Morning Admissions are from 6am-11:59am
Afternoon Admissions are from 12noon- 3:39pm
Evening Admissions are from 4pm-9pm
You may however take your usual morning medication with sips of water unless you have been specifically asked to stop by your Consultant or nurse.
If you are a smoker it is important that you try to stop smoking at least one week in advance of your surgery. Smoking increases the risk of complications after surgery – particularly in relation to the wound healing process. Starting nicotine replacement therapy one to two months before surgery can reduce the risk of complications.
