Some patients will require a pre-operative assessment to assess their suitability for General Anaesthetic. This is an appointment with an Anaesthetist who will ask you questions on your medical history and a nurse will take blood samples and swabs. You will automatically require a pre-operative assessment if you fall into any of the following categories;
- If you are over 60 years old and having a general anaesthetic
- If you are having major surgery including, but not limited to, joint replacement or spinal fusion
A medical questionnaire will be asked by our booking team when they contact you to make the arrangements for your surgery. This appointment is nothing to worry about, it is simply designed to give us as much information about your requirements as is possible. The requirement to have a pre op should not preclude you from having surgery and you should be as truthful and explicit as possible when answering questions about your current health status.
It would be very helpful if you could bring along a full list of all medications that you are taking to this appointment.
This appointment is free of charge, for self funding patients. If you are using insurance to fund your procedure, please ensure that you inform your insurance company that it is happening.
