Some patients will require a pre-operative assessment to assess their suitability for general anaesthetic. This appointment is with an Anaesthetist who will ask you questions on your medical history and a nurse will also take blood samples and swabs.
Please note, you will automatically require a pre-operative assessment if you fall into any of the following categories:
- You are over 60 years old and having a general anaesthetic
- You are having major surgery including, but not limited to, joint replacement or spinal fusion
Our booking team will ask for a medical questionnaire when they contact you to make the arrangements for your surgery.
This appointment is nothing to worry about, it is simply designed to give us as much information about your requirements as is possible. The requirement to have a pre-operative assessment should not preclude you from having surgery and you should be as truthful and explicit as possible when answering questions about your current health status.
When attending this appointment, it would be very helpful to could bring along a full list of all medications that you are currently taking.
This appointment is free of charge for self-funding patients. If you are using insurance to fund your procedure, please ensure that you have informed your insurance company that this appointment is happening.
